Santiago de la Ribera was founded in the early 20th century as a summer retreat for wealthy families from Murcia. Named after Saint James (Santiago) and its location on the shore (ribera) of the Mar Menor, it has developed from a small holiday settlement into a popular coastal resort.

Location and Accessibility

Santiago de la Ribera is located on the western shore of the Mar Menor in the municipality of San Javier, Murcia. It is approximately 70 kilometers from Alicante Airport and just 2 kilometers from Murcia-San Javier Airport (now closed to commercial flights but home to the Spanish Air Academy).
