La Mata (officially known as Torrelamata) is a coastal district of Torrevieja with its own unique character. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, with archaeological evidence of Roman salt production.
Location and Accessibility
La Mata is located on the northern coast of Torrevieja, approximately 45 kilometers south of Alicante and its international airport. It is easily accessible via the N-332 coastal road and the AP-7 motorway.
Lifestyle
Life in La Mata offers a more relaxed and traditional alternative to the busier Torrevieja city center. The area maintains a village-like atmosphere with a mix of Spanish and international residents.
Natural Features
La Mata is home to the northern section of the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja, a protected natural park featuring salt lakes, sand dunes, and diverse flora and fauna. The park is a haven for birdwatchers, with flamingos being the most iconic residents.
Beaches
The main beach, Playa de La Mata, stretches for over 2.3 kilometers and has been awarded the Blue Flag for its cleanliness and facilities. The beach features fine golden sand, clear waters, and a gradual slope into the sea, making it ideal for families with children.
