San Pedro del Pinatar, located in the Region of Murcia, has a rich history dating back to Roman times when it was an important center for salt production. The town's name, which translates to "Saint Peter of the Pine Forest," reflects the once-abundant pine trees that covered the area.
Location and Accessibility
San Pedro del Pinatar is situated at the northern end of the Mar Menor, Europe's largest saltwater lagoon, with the Mediterranean Sea on its eastern side. It is approximately 65 kilometers from Alicante Airport and 45 kilometers from Murcia International Airport.
Natural Features
The crown jewel of San Pedro del Pinatar's natural environment is the Regional Park of Salinas y Arenales, a protected wetland area of international importance. This natural park covers more than 850 hectares and includes salt flats, sand dunes, pine forests, and beaches.
Beaches
San Pedro del Pinatar offers beaches on both the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean sides. The Mar Menor beaches, like Playa de La Puntica and Playa de Villananitos, feature calm, shallow waters ideal for families and water sports.
